I will only comment on the recording quality. If your idea of nirvana is to listen to an orchestra from the first row and your idea of a successful sound engineering job is to push the recording level right up to the threshold of distortion you will like this recording. To me it is recorded like compressed pop music and is too harsh to listen to because of it regardless of the quality of the performance.

I really wanted to like it but couldn't after having my ears assaulted by yet another unsuccessful PCM recording plunked onto an SACD.

Could not agree less than with the above comment from swestbom.A beautiful performance and recording fully deserving of the accolades it has won.If you experience any distortion then you should look at your playback equipment. The recording is nigh on perfect-close to provide impact but with plenty of air. Great string tone and focus with the added excitement of performances of Mackerras' Indian summer in the recording studio. We can only hope for more!

It is difficult to assess this set of discs fairly because the recording quality is simply awful. After repeated listening my overall judgement has not changed. The metallic, unpleasant sound of the violins is worse than on any redbook CD. Combined with a lack of bass (and warmth), this creates a rather synthetic impression, which I found disturbing right from the start. In terms of performance, the recordings fare somewhat better, but there is little forward momentum, especially in the Jupiter Symphony (just listen to Seiji Ozawa's fiery account with the Mito Chamber Orchestra).

Fortunately, the Beethoven piano concertos recorded with the same orchestra and conductor are a different matter.
