Incredible what the Praga guys can do with poor tapes. The starting material for the Beethoven Concerto dates from a radio broadcast from Prague during the Prague Festival of 1957 and boy is it poor, but from it they have conjured up and captured in wonderful DSD a bravura performance of the Emperor by arguably the world's greatest ever pianist but who none-the-less appears all too infrequently on disc. What amazes me is how well the piano part is portrayed whilst the accompanying orchestra fares less well from a tape or tapes that all too clearly are frayed at the edges.
It's a must for genuine classicists collectors and fans of Michelangeli and as good a performance of the Emperor as you will ever hear on disc. It is not the only attraction, Debussy's "Images" is played with freshness and charm that defies its age and a more colourful interpretation would be hard to imagine.
Top marks to Praga, almost literal silk purse!
