I've mentioned the above /showthread/109915/115556#115556 recently ; doing a Google site:SA-CD.net search I find 'The Criterion Collection' hardly discussed.

As I said earlier today, /showthread/115614/115689#115689 :
ideas, that benefit the upkeep, remembrance that 'support' is appreciated in buying (assorted member [where your standing counts] endorsed) goods through vendors...

Well, in short (before I go offline for the night), to all film lovers (including you not in North America but can resolve playback of "DVDs and Blu-ray discs [that] are encoded region 1" then) I cannot commend The Criterion Collection enough !!

Do readers in-the-know have time to vouch their worth ? Keen to initiate a community discussion of soon to be releases as well as already available titles for collecting ?

I order them from first clicking into /support then into Amazon.com

Excerpts from http://www.criterion.com/help :
1. What is the Criterion Collection?
The Criterion Collection is a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films on home video. Our editions often feature restored film transfers, commentary tracks, and other supplemental features that the company pioneered when it released its first laserdiscs, Citizen Kane and King Kong, at the end of 1984. Ever since, Criterion has been working closely with filmmakers and scholars to ensure that each film is presented as its maker would want it seen and published in an edition that will deepen the viewer’s understanding and appreciation of the art of cinema...

8. What is the difference between Criterion, Eclipse, and Essential Art House?
The Criterion Collection is dedicated to gathering the greatest films from around the world and publishing them in editions of the highest technical quality, with supplemental features that enhance the appreciation of the art of film. Eclipse is a selection of lost, forgotten, or overshadowed classics in simple, affordable editions. Each Eclipse series is a brief cinematheque retrospective for the adventurous home viewer. Essential Art House is exactly that: movie-only editions of the films you need to know, presented in beautiful digital transfers and accompanied by helpful liner notes. For the devoted cinephile, these are must-own fundamentals; for the novice film lover, this is precisely where to begin...

14. Why do Criterion releases often cost more than other DVDs?
Our prices reflect all the resources we put into making each release a special release. Each release has a producer who finds the best supplemental features to help further the appreciation of the film, often producing original content. The technical staff ensures that we are working with the best original source materials and digital masters by performing rigorous visual and audio restoration processes...

You're bringing SA.CD.net into new territory by mentioning the Criterion Collection.

I have been a collector of their films on DVD and now Blu Ray.

As we already have a BD~A niche on this site, doubtful that classic films will pique the interest of music collectors, Wilhelm.

Have you seen Fanny and Alexander, Wilhelm? Simply amazing film. I have approximately 50 Criterion BD~Vs in my collection.

On the contrary Ralph:

in other thread there has already been mentioned that the new release of THIEF by CC is very welcomed, since it contains full o.s.t. by Tangeriene Dream and is the only hi-res TD release sice Rubycon 12 years ago.

I Also buy their restored copies of films from 70s but not so excessively.

Just ordered Chaplin's City Lights from Amazon for $20. That is what I normally pay for Criterion BD~Vs and what bargains they are. Restored with so many exclusive extras. Wish hi res music was as cheap and think what it takes to restore an entire movie and author it with so many extras (some exclusive to Criterion).

Wish Tangerine Dream would authorize 5.1 restorations of their tremendous back catalogue.

A group custom made for 5.1!

Steve Wilson, are you listening????????

+1 Ralph,

but I feel its not only up to SW to decide what albums he could do.
I heard that there might be contractual problems esp. with Virgin releases, which might be the clue why we do not see other Mike Oldfield albums in Hi-res.

As you might know Virgin Records & Virgin Music sold itself to EMI back in 1991. EMI sold greater parts of their backcats to UNIVERSAL? No-one knows which is which nowadays - lot of legal turmoil brings dust over the reels of the recorded gems. That might be the cause, why we are presented by BD-A that are second-rate (no flames, pls) and not top notch releases from 70s & 80s.

It is a sort of a small surprise that we might put our hans on some Yes albums from 70s but I doubt there will be more past their Great Generator one.

I know there are some surround mixes from OPEN YOUR EYES and probably LADDER.

Sorry old chap but I haven't the remotest idea what you are talking about.

Let's just stick to SACD shall we... please and leave the whimsical Facebook and Video musings for different more appreciative audiences.

When I think of Criterion and the issues of lost art, I think of the movie, The Rock. Hardly worth the effort Criterion put in for that "high" quality movie.
