Ok it's working now.

Great! The site uses Amazon Web Services S3 cloud for world wide distribution. So as not to cause the customer to have to wait while their selection(s) are Zipped for delivery, nativedsd pays for Amazon to store two copies of every album; one a pre-Zipped complete album, and one of the independent tracks for track sales.

The problem occurs when we ingest a new album. While the individual Tracks are immediately available for delivery, the full Zipped album needs to wait till Amazon Zips the files, and distributes them to their seventeen world wide data centers.

Thanks for your patience, and enjoy the Bruckner.

Typically. Most likely, Mr. Hurwitz doesn't listen in hi-res, and perhaps isn't therefore used to wide dynamic range:

"Reference Recordings is known for its resplendent sonics, but recording live is always tricky. Here, the result isn’t quite as fabulous as in previous releases, being perhaps a touch low-level, but it’s still pretty awesome. Just turn up the volume for the best effect."

Hence, not the full 10 for sonics, although he praises the performance.

Hurwitz's sound ratings for 2 of the 3 Pittsburgh Mahler series reviewed was 10 with the other a 9. Those were on the Exton label. On the Reference label,Hurwitz rates the sound of 2 out of 3 Pittsburgh recordings at 10 and one a 9. All were recorded by Soundmirror, but the Exton recordings were mixed and mastered by Exton personnel. Hurwitz gave the sound of the Reference recording of the Dvorak/Janacek a 10, although I would rate the stereo track somewhat less. In any case, a 9 isn't bad.

We're too wrapped up in numbers.

Maybe, but numbers do help us conceptualize.

Just wanted to leave a note to the effect that this is a SUPERB release, both interpretively and sonically. Its managed to push all my other Br. fourths aside incl the Bohm and even the Karajan. Read Castor's excellent review and dont hesitate to buy!!

I've been meaning to post about this recording myself since I got it last month. It's a wonderful interpretation IMHO, with a great deal of spontaneity - and some of Honeck's rethinking of balances (a couple of which he refers to in his booklet notes) are spectacularly successful. I also love the flexibility of tempo in this performance - it certainly enlivens the listening, and I find it very convincing!

I'm a little less sanguine about the SQ - it's a little close-in for my taste, although still very good. I listened to it at about the same time that I finally got around to listening to Harnoncourt's Bruckner 5th with the VPO (late to the party, I know!) - that's a recording with a sense of spaciousness that's much more to my taste. But of course so many of our SQ preferences are just personal taste! ;-)

I've listened to this one twice over the past couple of weeks while grading Chemistry lab reports and exams/quizzes so not particularly attentive listening. I find it to be a very good performance but I can't say it is actually superior to several that I already have. Perhaps I'm going through a Bruckner 4 burn-out. I would gladly return to it when I want to hear this symphony again.

As Chris noted, the sound is a close in perspective which I find can be quite exciting (and prefer over a too distant one). One of the interesting aspects of the sound is that you can "hear" the venue ambiance before the performance begins (the "breathing" of the hall itself so to speak) which lends a dash of realism to the sound. This continues between tracks. I like the sound a lot.

If I were to write a formal review, I'd have to give this an undivided listen which, at this point, probably ain't gonna happen - I'm taking a break from Bruckner 4 for a bit. Nevertheless, this one is really good for performance and sound.

This will restore your health and appetite. It did so for me, after so many years of seeking for the right medicine.

I generally like Abbado as a conductor but I've never heard any of his Bruckner. Will have to check that out sometime. Thanks. According to Arkivmusic's site, he's recorded 1,4,5,7 & 9. What, no 8th!!?? That seems odd as I regard the 8th as Bruckner's pinnacle (had he been able to complete the 9th, that may have been a different story).
