The Obsession BD-A/CD set can be ordered from Intrada, a soundtrack collector clearinghouse based here in Northern California.

I can recommend their own label release of Bernard Herrmann's complete music for "North by Northwest", mastered from Tascam DA-88 transfers of the original three-track 35mm magnetic film recordings.

Thanks, undertone. Just checked out their website.

I don't know if you are a film buff, but the Warner BD~V transfer of Hitchcock's classic North by Northwest is available in a very classy digibook. The video was scanned in 8K from the original VistaVision elements and looks absolutely stunning and the original monaural soundtrack has been repurposed into 5.1 Dolby TrueHD (albeit 48/16 bit) with subtle but effective use of the surround channels.

An absolutely stunning experience, visually and aurally and highly recommended. Included in the disc's bonus features is Herrmann's isolated score in Dolby Digital 5.1, as well.

Ironically, it's the same price as the Intrada single disc RBCD. Probably good to have BOTH!

I don't know if you are a film buff...

Rammie, I'm an incurable lifelong film buff. Spent most of one summer during my teens in an art-house theater in Hollywood watching Janus Film classics from England, France, Italy, Sweden. Dragged the future Mrs. Undertone to a screening of "The White Hell of Piz Palu" (avalanche in the Swiss Alps) at the (unheated) Silent Movie Theater on Melrose... on a freezing cold night.

The cinema experience has diminished somewhat for me since the switchover to DCP. It's just not as magical as real 35mm film projection. But I have seen some very good restorations and a few new films projected properly, and can appreciate the advantages of digital cinema technology from my experience in lower-budget video production and editing.

I have watched the Blu-Ray of "North by Northwest" and agree with your high ratings for the transfer quality and sound mix. The Intrada CD is in stereo, and really communicates the presence of the orchestra in a large film studio soundstage.

There are a number of recordings of Bernard Hermann conducting his own film music on the Decca label (London Phase 4 in the US) that could attract a new generation of listeners on SACD or BD-A, though in stereo only (unless multi-track studio work tapes could be located). I recommend the Mobile Fidelity CD "Music from Great Film Classics" (MoFi UDCD 701), and the better-known "Fantasy Film World of Bernard Herrmann, both OOP and getting fairly expensive.

The Fantasy Film World of Bernard Herrmann on Phase 4 remains one of my treasured discs and would hope one day that one of the SACD reissue companies sees fit to release it.....or even Universal on BD~A (from the original analogue masters).

Now THAT would be a stellar 5.1 project if ever there was one and wondering if the Phase 4 multitracks are intact.

Undertone, with 4K, your "35mm quality" dreams will finally reach fruition and with 8K.........can't imagine!

Those who have been resisting purchasing this splendid BD~A/RBCD set because of high prices (AmazonUK first listed it for £24.99) can be assured that the same AmazonUK now has it for £13.99.
AmazonUK also erroneously has it listed as a CD+DVD set. It is in fact the BD~A 5.1/stereo/RBCD if you read the description on their website.

Annoying now, that you have to spend £20 for free super saver delivery. ( When more often than not, I want just one item, less than £20 ! )
