The problem is that if the discussion forum will be henceforth hidden and that the discussion section will be tied directly to the individual SACD or Blu-ray disc themselves, the opportunities to having a free flowing conversation on topics that are on tangents will be constrained and that will be a detriment to this site.

An example: somebody wants to (god forbid) discuss the DVD-A version or download or some other tangential topics or discuss BPO DSD or Channel Classics DSD downloads etc, etc,...

While comparisons are inevitable, people have to remember the focus of the site. If there's too much dilution of focus, the discussion doesn't serve anybody. Hence the general disinterest in the forum as it currently exists. We'll just have to see how it goes.

As for other semi-related topics I feel under no obligation to provide a venue for these. Nor, it appears, do the providers of such formats.

Where?

On Mt. Olympus!!? (^_-)v

I'm not trying to give you a hard time. It seems you're getting enough flak already, but...

Geez... Have you been reading any of the POSITIVE comments HERE regarding the forum?

Dear Stephen,

The BIS Thread is by FAR the longest and one of the oldest on this Forum.
I have spent - LITERALLY - many hundred, possibly thousands of hours on it, and it contains more "wisdom" (or stupidities) from me than any other site or collection anywhere. Indeed, it is the only place where I have been totally open.

In a way, it is my written legacy (for whatever it is worth). To see it disappear just like that makes me unutterably sad. I could have spent my time rather more commercially, but I thought it was important for the buyers to see a little bit of what's going on in the business from "the other side of the table", as it were.

Whereas I do realise that the site is yours to do with as you please, I must say that I find this decision a very sad one. It also would mean a breakup with "friends" that I have never met but somehow feel I know.

I don't honestly think that I will take the time from my rather hectic diary to follow or contribute to this site without the Forum part.

As you said: "or not".

As a personal favour, could you please copy the BIS thread somehow and send as a file to me? Or if any other knows how to do it, please?

What you don't seem to realise is that, with 4000+ posts, nobody new is going to read it. Nobody. The problem with forums is that it only serves those who are there at the time. Great entertainment for a few, I'm sure. A longstanding aim of this site has been to tie discussion to the relevant title so it will be accessible going forward. So if someone lands on the title page here for a BIS disc released a few years ago, all the details, reviews AND discussion are there to be read. Long after the general forum posts have been forgotten. Trust me on this, the new design better serves your interests.

That may have something to do with the fact that the forum's search function was removed several years ago . . .

When I google for info on some older SACDs, sa-cd.net forum posts frequently come up, including posts by Robert from the long BIS thread.

So it's not that those posts are now useless just because they are no longer on the top of the forum page.

I think the forum has very good content, which makes new people arrive here at the first place. When I google for a new SACD release, dozens of the webstore pages come up, with the same minimal info on the disc. And then there is this site, which often already has a discussion thread on the disc (if the disc is listed here) or a forum post announcing and discussing the disc.

Wrong, as I have been made aware of, but, admittedly, very few would read it from end to end.
Very few read diaries from end to end, but the info is there anyway, should one want to refer to any part of it.
And it is the availability I am talking about.
If I didn't believe (and I am not being a megalomaniac) that comments from the professional people within the business were illuminating for the interested public, I wouldn't have spent the time on them. Extremely many comments, both here and elsewhere directly, have told me that people do appreciate them, whether or not they agree with what I have written.

But there is no profit in arguing with you. You have decided, and the decision is yours to arrive at, so that's that.

Before you state what serves my interests or not, you might want to define the word "interests". If you think that all I am interested in is numbers and maximising profits, think again. I could make a much better living, financially speaking, in almost any other profession. My interests are totally different and are related to two main topics - Music and energy creation/conservation.
It all has to do with choice. If I rcord something and make sure that it is permanently available in basically any format, I have done the world a service. And in my work for energy c/c I am trying to make sure that there is a world to save the music to.

Your site. Your choice.
Please, could you back up "my" thread and send it to me?

Robert

I apologise if I take a long term view ...

I'm not sure that alienating one's constituency is taking the long-term view.

I'm afraid I'm going to absent myself from future discussion on this matter. I seem to recollect that I went through the invective and dummy spits before when the site adopted Blu-ray Audio. There's a LOT more to do on the new site. I suggest people check back in a few weeks to decide whether there's a net gain for them or not. Nobody likes change but it's unreasonable not to expect some changes over the length of time this site has been around.
