I know that the following recordings are recorded on quad (mostly they are still available on DVD-Audio, but it is very hard to find the physical releases).

1) Strauss, Richard: Eine Alpensinfonie (An Alpine Symphony) & Also sprach Zarathustra (Thus spoke Zarathustra)
Staatskapelle Dresden, Rudolf Kempe (The inlay contains the following text: "This landmark recording has been remastered from the original analogue tapes by Abbey Road Studios using the latest technology: includes 4.0 surround sound").

2) Holst, Gustav: The Planets, Op. 32 (Suite for large orchestra), Music for the ballet "The Perfect Fool" & Egdon Heath
London Symphony Orchestra, Andre Previn (The inlay contains the following text: "This landmark recording has been remastered from the original analogue tapes by Abbey Road Studios using the latest technology: includes 4.0 surround sound").

3) Strauss, Richard: Salome
Hildegard Behrens (Salome), José Van Dam (Jokanaan), Agnes Baltsa (Herodias), Karl-Walter Böhm (Herodes), Wieslaw Ochman (Narraboth), Heljä Angervo (Page), Michel Sénéchal, David Knutson, Martin Vantin, Gerhard Unger, Erich Kunz (Juden), Jules Bastin, Dieter Ellenbeck (Nazarenen), Gerd Nienstedt, Kurt Rydl (Soldaten), Helge Von Bömches (Ein Cappadocier), Horst Nitsche (Ein Sklave, Wiener Philharmoniker, Herbert von Karajan
(The booklet contains the following information: "Remastered from the original 8-track tapes").

4) Wagner, Richard: Overtures and Preludes (The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, Tannhäuser, Lohengrin, The Flying Dutchman & Tristan and Isolde)
Berliner Philharmoniker, Herbert von Karajan (The inlay contains the following text: "This landmark recording has been remastered from the original analogue tapes by Abbey Road Studios using the latest technology: includes 4.0 surround sound").

5) Ravel, Maurice: Bolero, La Valse & Daphnis et Chloe (complete recording)
Orchestre de Paris, Jean Martenon (The inlay contains the following text: "This landmark recording has been remastered from the original analogue tapes by Abbey Road Studios using the latest technology: includes 4.0 surround sound").

6) Handel, Georg Friedrich: Music for the Royal Fireworks & Water Music
London Symphony Orchestra, Prague Chamber Orchestra, Sir Charles Mackerras (The inlay contains the following text: "This landmark recording has been remastered from the original analogue tapes by Abbey Road Studios using the latest technology: includes 4.0 surround sound").

7) Messiaen, Oliver: Turangalila Symphony
Michel Beroff (piano), Jeanne Loriod (Ondes Martenot), London Symphony Orchestra, Andre Previn (The inlay contains the following text: "This landmark recording has been remastered from the original analogue tapes by Abbey Road Studios using the latest technology: includes 4.0 surround sound").

If you know more albums you can write their informations here. It would be nice if Pentatone will start a new series which contains the remastered quadraphonic recordings from the catalogue of Emi/Warner Classics.

Moi.

The Turangalila has already been released on SACD. Dunno of the others and wouldn't even really care.

Messiaen: Turangalîla Symphony - Previn

EDIT: Many others in your list, at least the first two on it, seem also to be available on SACD, based on a quick check.

EDIT2: Right, you are talking about MCh. Sorry, I'm just being dumb. Those above are in stereo only.

Was Salome a quad recording? Mastered from 8-track does not necessarily mean quad, it just means that a multichannel master could be made from the session tapes (which seems increasingly unlikely in this day and age).

Anyhow, there was a lot more released digitally. DTS Entertainment released a bunch as DTS CDs in 1998, including Karajan's Tchaikovsky 4-6 and Mozart 35-41, Martinon's orchestral works of Debussy, a disc of the composer leading some of his Bachanias Brasilieras, Berglund doing Grieg and others, and the aforementioned Previn recording of the Planets. Although they said they were remixed in 5.1, they really just put out the quad mix, leaving the center channel silent.

There were many more released in the 70s. In particular, there's a discography here: http://www.surrounddiscography.com/quaddisc/quadclas.htm. Note that Angel=EMI, and that this obviously only includes released titles.

That said, given that Pentatone's main connection seems to be with Universal Music, I suspect it's more likely they'd move to Decca next if they do move to another label.

Decca France released some QS Quad LPs so it hopefully there will be some releases possible from that label. Fingers crossed however for EMI releases though which were large in number. I would really like to see the recordings of King's College Cambridge released, they were great in Quad.

I have obtained several of these and the sound is generally good. I was not aware of the Karajan/Salome release. Do you have a photo as I would love to try to hunt it down?

I had the Debussy DTS titles when I had my first multi-channel system (2000 - 2003), but the sound quality was and probably still is quite harsh and unforgiving.

Unlistenable.

You can find the entire "DTS Entertainment" quadraphonic catalog on the Usenet newsgroup alt.binaries.sounds.dts.

What I know about usenet newsgroups is, is that it has nothing to do with news, but facilitates parties to earn money by distributing content without the content owners permission and without paying for it. Even if not illegal in all cases it is amoral.

This post would have been deleted long ago if the mods were paying any attention. Feinstei, you should know better.

Luukas, I always enjoy your reviews. They were relevant, short, sharp and sweet, even Pentatone quoted a portion on their website in their DG remastered Vasary's Mozart piano 14 & 16 edition. Keep it up!
