According to the Concertgebouw's own site and Pentatone's Groot geluid there will be double DSD live concerts streaming from both Amsterdam and Japan. I am already out travelling in Asia so double DSD streaming is not anything I can try.But what I found most interesting about Groot's post over at Computer Audiophile was the fact that he really praised the very simply mic'd, apparently 2 mics only! relay from the Concertgebouw.
For plain stereo I wish they would do the same with their Pentatone recordings which, while generally very good can sometimes sound a bit "phasey" and not always ideally clear and coherent.
Certainly interesting to hear someone who has always here argued that 2 mics are not enough, now say he is impressed by simple 2 mics only miking of a large orchestra.
And at double DSD instead of the standard DSD 64 Pentatone has recorded at so far.
It seems that LSO LIVE have already started to record at double DSD.
Mind you their main problem are the acoustics, not samplng rates imo.
The difference between native DSD and 24/96 from them is almost inaudible anyway.
But what about Pentatone, would double DSD make a noticable difference or not?
Anyway I heard a superb live concert of among other works Rachmaninov's 2nd piano concerto from one of the best seats in the hall a couple of nights ago here in Singapore, and as usual nothing, neither double nor quad or whatever sampling rate can even come close to the real thing imo.
The SSO is a really good orchestra and the pianist Nelson Goerner played stupendously well too.
And BIS Sacd's sell for 22 SGD each in the foayer stall at every concert.
Looking forward to their next release.
Cheers Chris

Not sure wot you're on about with "double DSD", but if you mean 128fs or even 256fs, count me in.

Multi-channel 128fs sounds as if you're actually sitting in the venue where they're playing.

DSD 128 is sometimes referred to as double DSD and DSD 256 quad, and DSD 512 octa and so on.
I don't know if there are any recordings or ways of playing anything above 512 as yet. But I suspect that apart from getting rid of the noise that both can and does seep into the audible range from mastered/edited DSD 64,there might be other audible advantages of going at least to DSD 128.
I have only been able to compare two recordings DSD 64 and DSD 128 and there seems to be slightly more air and realism from the two recordings I am thinking of and have mentioned here before.
I have not heard DSD 128 in mch.But in plain stereo it can sound very good indeed. And I got the impression from Groot's post that these relays from the Concertgebouw were stereo only and mic'd with only two mics.
The reason I reposted here was my surprise over his praising the 2 mics only stereo take as very clear and highly resolved.I'd love to hear his take on this in more detail.
I am very interested in optimal SQ with simple miking and would love to get my hands on a portable DSD 128 capable or higher rates recorder.
The only thing I have found so far this autumn in Singapore is a unit from SONY that does DSD 64.
Rob Watts the man behind HUGO and now the new DAC DAVE regards DSD 64 as fundamentally flawed. He says PCM is better.
Personally I don't really care that much if recordings are done in DSD or PCM as long as they sound realistic and nonfatiquing to my ears.
