Having listened to this set for a good while now, may I say I agree with every word of Geohominid's review - this is superb in every way!

This is a lovely performance ... but I am finding some 'distortion'/scratchiness/grain in the string sound. This is very noticeable when played on my speakers (e.g. CD 3- track 1 & 2); less so on headphones. Anyone else notice same?

I agree that these are wonderful performances. I don't hear anything I'd identify as distortion, just an occasionally acidic edge to the concertino violin(s) that is a bit more pronounced in concerto #11 (disc 3, tracks 1-4)than elsewhere in the set. Since #11 was recorded in the same sessions as 4,6,7,8,10 where the effect is not so evident I infer that this is a performer choice not a technical issue.

The latest "review" for this SACD disturbs me greatly, and it is not the first one of its kind by this reviewer (see Respighi: Roman Trilogy - Neschling). I have not heard this disc, but I am pretty certain the reviewer is listening with his eyes and not his ears. Does he realize there is a difference between 16 and 24 bit PCM? 24/44 BIS SACDs can sound much better than some DSD ones, and while I believe DSD and higher frequency PCM can yield better results, 24/44 is NOT simply up-sampled CD quality. The high marks for performance (without any useful explanation) just magnify the pointlessness of this review. Luckily both of these SACDs have other well-informed reviews to balance out this spam.

This type of ignorance may just compel to me to buy this SACD out of spite, and maybe several more for my friends.

My ranting will now cease.

I was about to post something about "mlgrado's" reviews, too. He doesn't seem to post in any other threads and mainly rants about resolution numbers. Maybe he'll soon tire of playing with his poo.

At the point that I read the Cameron Carpenter "review", really just a paean to Telarc which hasn't released a new sacd in years, I began to wonder if our old friend Teresa had undergone gender reassignment and decided to reappear as Andrew Ballew. Hopefully these non-reviews will cease and Mr. Ballew will start a discussion thread that the rest of us can ignore while he flogs this long dead horse to his heart's content.

Teresa was trying doggedly to convince BIS to go DSD, and did not succeed, but she was holding SACD to a high standard. The guys gave Teresa plenty of reaction in those days, as I recall, and she had my sympathies. BIS eventually did choose to go to higher resolution PCM. Why pillory them now? These latest reviews do not rise to the level of Teresa, because they only carp at past product without promoting anything.

I see that one UK dealer is offering these performances as a studio quality 24 bit/96 kHz download.

How can this be possible, if the original sample rate of the recording was 24/44?
