I did it. I bought this recording and will be listening critically over the next few days. Anyone else getting it?

Do you gave any of the CD releases to compare it to?

I have the old Music and Arts CD. This release is a hybrid, though, so both PCM and DSD layers.

Would be nice to have an SACD of the Lucerne 1954 Philharmonia performance, certainly my favourite WF 'Choral'.

If this is the famous 1942 performance (can't read the label) it is certainly very fine and fiery (some think it is a tad overrated) - although the timpani can sound like someone kicking an old tea chest...

Is the source material listed?

From what I've read, the Music and Arts version was not one of the better sonically, but it should still be interesting to hear how this mastering compares to it.

Here's the source material on this release:

Transferred from records collected by Shuichiro Kawai, label and number, Melodiya D010851-3.

wonder wether that's a good idea. I asume inferior sound quality will result and that carries the danger that people not involved in technology may question the advantages of DSD remastering and SA-CD. I think for SA-CD releases source material should be used that is at least superior to the CD format, in my oppinion this means at least studio quality analog master tapes, even if mono.

There are no studio quality analog master tapes for this recording as it is a live recording and the original broadcast tapes are long gone.

Dutchman, do you have a report to make on your recently acquired SACD of Furtwangler's 1942 Beethoven Ninth? I am very interested in knowing how the new SACD stacks up against the Redbook editions on Music and Arts and Tahra, and especially the Japanese Melodya issue of 1993, or thereabouts.

I bought the Great Recordings of the Century EMI Bayreuth Festival Ninth, as it was my introduction to the work (on LP) and I thought it was a wonderful performance then. Boy, has my opinion changed since then. I couldn't believe how mannered the performance was, nor how relatively poor the sound quality was as well.
