I would like to post a review of the Pentatone Stravinsky: Symphony of Psalms. But because it is listed as "not yet released" there is no provision to post a review. The status should be updated. I have had this disc for nearly a week.

Robert, why not post your review on here? It's not available in the UK yet but it is firmly on my 'Wish List' and I for one would welcome your listening experience.

Steviev said in my thread concerning the wandering center image in some new PentaTones:

"You hypothesize that the center channel may be artificially derived from the fronts. You can test this by listening solely to the center channel. If the balance between singer and orchestra stays the same as the fronts, then you are likely correct. If PentaTone hung an extra mike or two before the chanteuse, then her voice should be relatively louder compared to the fronts mix."

I am looking forward to your review and I hope you will include an analysis of the multi-channel recording to determine if it sounds like discrete miking of the center channel or if that center image is derived from the stereo mix.

If enough people show awareness and appreciation of the superiority of discretely miked mch recordings as opposed to mch recordings that are bastardized from the stereo mix, maybe PentaTone will pressure their other sources to maintain the high recording standards set by Polyhymnia - the people responsible for PentaTone's reputation for excellence.

Windsurfer,

I have posted my review and I did make specific reference to your thread. While I listened for the issues that you noted I did not listen with the specifity as suggested by Steviev. I will listen (in full multi-channel - not just center channel) again this afternoon. Sometimes such artifacts come into focus on repeated listens. Thanks for you observations.

For those reviewing this disc...

Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms HAS NO VIOLINS in the orchestration. He makes up for that by the use to two pianos and extended woodwind and brass.

Wow! Even in his own recording? Amazing?!

Well now,

Your very nice review indicated that you found no evidence of a flimsy conjured up as opposed to a discretely miked center channel.

And no wonder, as it turns out that this one is from Polyhymnia! I should be getting my copy in a few days.

If you look at the score, you will find there are NO high strings... Only cellos and basses. That is the original scoring.

He was being facetious. The unique sound is part of the special beauty of the work.
