Performance:   Sonics:
I have read very mixed reviews of Pragadigital SACD releases and have been reluctant to try them. I couldn't pass this one up, however, because the Milstein/Fistoulari Brahms is one of my favorites and I have always liked his Goldmark very much as well. The short answer on how good these transfers are is that they are excellent. The Brahms is full and rich, and quite clear, compares favorably to the original EMI LP, and certainly surpasses the 1999 RBCD, and the Goldmark, while not as fine a recording originally, is, if anything, a bit of an improvement over the EMI reissue Concert Classics British LP pressing. Milstein at his very best, with excellent orchestral support, fine early '60s EMI sound carefully transferred, and a worthy addition to any SACD collection if the newest and best in recorded sound is not your only goal.

Performance:   Sonics:
Here is the long-awaited SACD reissue of the benchmark version of the Concerto for Violin N°1 by Karl Goldmark (1830-1915), a Hungarian composer and pedagogue who had Sibelius as a student. He is here directed by Harry Blech. The Concerto for Violin by Brahms which accompanies it is here directed by Anatole Fistoulari. As ever, Nathan Milstein delivers playing of rare elegance, and in the delicacy of his musical discourse resides exemplary purity. As a bonus, the rehearsal in Salzburg in 1956 of the Chaconne BWV 1004 by Jean-Sebastian Bach confirms that purity. This recording, a moment of absolute grace, is a wonder at each moment, and will forever remain stamped in the memories of all music lovers. The quality of the DSD remastering participates in this reedition, and the label Praga Digitals can never be thanked enough for the hours spent restoring the original tapes. All for music, and nothing but.
