Mahler: Symphony No. 8 - Gergiev        (12 of 12 found this review helpful)
  September 6, 2009

For my money, this recording is the best all-around M8 – especially in multi-channel surround. I would not call it my favorite recording, but would certainly make it my first recommendation to someone looking for an M8. Why? While it may not be the best in any single area, it is very ... more
Mahler: Symphony No. 8 - Inbal          (5 of 5 found this review helpful)

Surprisingly, this one is a real winner. In some respect, I shouldn’t be “surprised” because Inbal’s first commercial M8 attempt (Denon/Brilliant label) is very good. Also, the Tokyo Met SO recently made some very nice recordings under the baton of Bertini. However, I was most disappointed with the ... more
Mahler: Symphony No. 3 - Bernstein        (16 of 19 found this review helpful)

I purchased three of the new Sony/Japan releases of Bernstein's first Mahler cycle from HMV.jp: the third, fourth, and seventh symphonies. My comments apply generally to all three of these performances, but are being posted in this one review location. From my personal standpoint, there is no sense ... more
Mahler: Symphony No. 2 - Zinman          (11 of 16 found this review helpful)

My goodness, what am I to do when I want to listen to a great M2 in SACD? I have fine stereo ones from Slatkin, Ozawa, and Litton. And for multi-channel, I can choose from great ones by Fischer, MTT, Kobayashi and now Zinman. Let me start at the end (since it just finished). This is an absolutely ... more
Saint-Saens: Symphony No. 3 - Latry, Eschenbach        (12 of 14 found this review helpful)

I listened to this in multichannel SACD and found it to be an unbelievable experience. In fact, when I listen to this symphony, I want to come away from it feeling like I had a memorable experience. This is one of the few versions that pretty well satisfies me (along with the Barenboim/Chicago one). ... more

Just an update -- I received my order from JPC in yesterday's mail. I'll only be able to listen in small increments until the weekend. However, I gave Selling England a spin for 15 minutes this morning (in multi-channel) and it sounds fantastic. It is a very aggressive use of surrounds, although Peter Gabriels' voice is anchored front/center. ... more

I live in the US, but ordered mine from JPC. The exchange rate for USD v. Euros is much better now than it had been in the recent couple of years. 110 Euros = $140USD, plus about $20 shipping. I received a shipping notice today, and expect to receive the package in about a week. I've ordered many CD/SACD's from JPC over the years without a hitch. ... more

Thanks. Most of these newer Exton recordings sound fantastic in the "cheap" version that I buy. My equipment does not merit anything else (Denon 3808 Receiver, Oppo-980, NHT Classic 3's, etc.). Scott ... more

Does anyone know what the "Direct Cut" version of this CD represents? I can't imagine any scenario where I would pay $400 for a CD, but I am interested in WHY this version is priced as such. Of course that is the problem with these Exton-Octavia CD's: it is hard to get information on them until someone makes a purchase. FWIW, I am extremely ... more
Discussion: Mahler: Symphony No. 3 - Bernstein

To my ears, it is the reverberation that has been truncated. If you can wait until after the weekend, I will certainly be listening to these again to confirm. I don't remember ANY type of truncation on my Bernstein Century box set, so this caught me by surprise. As for the question on the rear channels, they are indeed used very sparingly for ... more
