Respighi: Pines of Rome, Fountains of Rome, Debussy: La Mer - Reiner        (6 of 7 found this review helpful)
  February 8, 2006

I wish I could adequately describe my excitement while listening to this newest manifestation of these incredible recordings. They have never sounded so wonderful, I promise you! The clarity uncovered by the the engineers at Soundmirror is startling. Finally we're hearing that breathless sheen on ... more
Encores - Kroumata Percussion Ensemble        (5 of 5 found this review helpful)
  January 12, 2006

The operative word here is "encores". If most percussion records are deadly serious -- rather like Boulez conducting Boulez -- then this one is more like Beecham conducting Lollipops. This is music on the other end of the spectrum from "East Meets West, Les Percussions de Strasbourg" from Philips ... more
Mozart: Sonatas for Piano & Violin - Uchida/Steinberg          (4 of 6 found this review helpful)
  November 12, 2005

I bought this disc after having read the above review and am extremely happy with my purchase. There are more than 70 minutes of great music on this SACD which was taped in "The Maltings", Snape, UK, the venue for many fine recordings. Makes me long for more SACDs from Philips and DG and Decca.
Britten: Frank Bridge Variations etc. - Netherlands Chamber Orchestra          (12 of 15 found this review helpful)
  July 26, 2005

I took a chance on this one -- not having read a word about it. But I've wanted a recording of the Britten for some time and the Bartok Divertimento is one of my favorite works for strings. This is my introduction to the music of Hartmann. I didn't have any qualms about the Netherlands Chamber ... more
Olatunji: Drums of Passion      (3 of 3 found this review helpful)
  December 1, 2004

I "grew up" with this recording and remember it fondly from my college days, but was completely unprepared for the way it sounds in multi-channel stereo. This is the real thing! -- the drummers and singers are in a seamless circle around the listener. Bass response is staggering -- we never heard it ... more

I'm hoping the Debussy chamber music release (scheduled for October 2015) will be the splendid Boston Symphony Chamber Players recording made in Symphony Hall in 1970. And, of course, we'll need Ozawa's Ravel volume 2 and 3 as well. Please. ... more
Brick and Mortar SACD shopping in NYC

I buy almost all my SACDs at J&R (they're within walking distance of my apartment). They have a large selection of labels, including relatively exotic ones. And discs are on their shelves as soon as they are available in the states. Prices are low and if you watch for the weekly sales you can save even more. But beware that once the initial batch ... more

This would surely be one of the discs I’d use to demonstrate the beauty of multi-channel recording to a doubting Thomas. The illusion of sitting in the 20th row of a mid-size auditorium is perfectly judged by the engineers. There is absolutely no sense of spot microphones for soloists, no need to separate the two pianos left and right nor to boost ... more
