Beethoven: 6 Overtures - Cluytens        (2 of 2 found this review helpful)
  August 12, 2015

When the Cluytens Beethoven cycle was released on individual LPs in the '60s these overtures were included as fillers on some of the LPs. Since the Cluytens cycle has just been released in Japan on 5 SACDs, symphonies only, the overtures have now been grouped on a single disc for release. They share ... more
Beethoven: Symphonies - Cluytens        (7 of 8 found this review helpful)

This set dates from the late '50s and has perhaps been somewhat under-rated. Cluytens seems to have had the ability to get his ideas across to an orchestra without interfering with the group's real basic sound. His recording of Ravel's complete orchestral music is virtually unique in letting the ... more

At the end of December 2014 I said of the Esoteric release of this famous performance that "while it has all of the expected SACD virtues of depth and richness, it lacks the clarity of the Universal Japan SHM-CD reissue, prompting the probably futile hope for an SHM-SACD release sometime in the ... more

Yes, the sound is truly excellent, and yes the clarity achieved in such a setting is impressive, and yes, ... more

I couldn't help myself, I had to compare the Audite and Tahra SACD versions of this historic performance. If you have one or the other, don't worry about replacing it, in terms of quality they're pretty much at the same level, which is superb. The Tahra seems to be mastered at a very slightly higher ... more

Discussion: Brahms, Goldmark: Violin Concertos - Milstein

Revisited this recording since my review, and agree there is more bass on the SACD transfer, but it comes out of my multichannel system as helping to clearly define the sound of the orchestra in the hall. And after all, it IS Brahms. ... more
Discussion: Elgar: Cello Concerto, Sea Pictures - Jacqueline du Pré, Janet Baker, Sir John Barbirolli
December 27, 2011
On December 17 rammiepie wrote, questioning the sound rating of 4.5 on the Elgar: "Sounds to me like a clear cut case of LP playback superior to SACD playback equipment. Don't logically think mastered from the original analogue tapes at Abbey Road Studios should produce anything less than a duplicate of the originals. I'm sure the SACD playback ... more
